FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why was this program created?

In 7 years, a primary private employer who has been contributing nearly a billion dollars to the local economy, the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, will be closing.

We must start today to create a more skilled workforce to enable economic growth in higher-paying jobs in San Luis Obispo county.

The purpose of the SLO Partners Precision Manufacturing Bootcamp is to create a career path and not just a job.

What type of students are you looking for?

Our primary focus is students with a positive can-do attitude who are open to learning new skills.

In other words, we “screen for attitude and train for aptitude.”

We don’t require existing tech or mechanical skills, but we tend to focus on students with the following characteristics:

Builder/maker hobbyists who would like to turn their hobby into a career
Recent high school graduates hoping to find a well-paying career without taking on student loan debt
Students in community colleges looking to develop skills in order to participate in a growing profession
Community members wanting to stay in SLO but needing a different career path to land a job here
Parents who wish to re-enter the workforce Military Veterans

Why should I join the Pre-apprenticeship Bootcamp?

We’ve helped dozens of local community members level up their skills and find a new career path.

If you are someone who...

Likes working with their hands
Enjoys working in a team
Gets excited about problem-solving
Loves learning new skills

The local industry has significant potential and needs motivated, reliable and ambitious individuals in order to grow.

What is the starting wage of a Production Technician in SLO County?

Typical starting wages range from $14-$18/hr on the Central Coast, but most provide opportunities for overtime, enabling you to earn even more.

Average salaries for experienced manufacturing production workers in the U.S. are between $50K-$60K/year.

Where is the class location and how long is it?

Total class time is 9 weeks long and starts June 7th. This is a hybrid class – online and in person. The online portion is conducted via Zoom. The in-person portion will be located at the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education across the street from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. You will be emailed a schedule and login information prior to the class.

Why do I need to register with Cuesta College?

SLO Partners runs several bootcamps and partners with both Cal Poly Extended Ed and Cuesta College. Our Precision Manufacturing bootcamp is in partnership with Cuesta College. By applying to SLO Partners, then registering with Cuesta College, you will receive the benefits of both organizations including engineering college course credits with Cuesta and career pathway and apprenticeship opportunities with SLO Partners.

What happens after the course?

Upon successful completion of the class, interested students will have the opportunity to be introduced to local employers for paid apprenticeships. This is a great way to get your foot in the door of a new career with a growing company. There is no guarantee of a job, but we work hard in connecting you to great employers.

Can I take the course even if I’m not interested in a career?

Yes. The course is open to all people qualified to register for a Cuesta College course.
